ABOUTDance with flARmingos pays homage to the flamingo and aspires to transform human-flamingo
relationships through a synthesis of magical realism, tech innovation,
and conservation science. Participants engage with immersive media experiences and apps that stage kinship between humans
and flamingos in social, fun and ecologically-ethical ways. The series expands to include moving image animation, laser beam animation,
and neon flamingos, and is made in partnership with
Tour du Valat, a research institute for
the conservation of Mediterranean wetlands in Arles, France; and in part through collaboration with
a team of artists, scientists, and technologists.
Artist and director Kristin Lucas plumbs the storytelling capacity of emerging technologies and innovates playful
new modes of experimentation that create pathways to agency, introducing alternatives to dire thoughts about human
activity. Lucas is the recent recipient of numerous grants and residencies, including an Engadget Alternate Realities
Grant and a Pioneer Works Tech Residency. Her work is represented by And/Or Gallery in Los Angeles, and Postmasters
and Electronic Arts Intermix in New York. She holds degrees from The Cooper Union and Stanford University, and teaches
in the art department of University of Texas at Austin.
