FLARMINGOS APPDownload the app! Tap on your screen to populate your surroundings with life-size augmented reality flamingos that perform courtship displays, flamingo "dance moves" researched by scientists. The flamingos are animated by human motion capture of the artist performing like a flamingo and a dynamic flocking algorithm that influences their collective behavior. FLAMINGOS v.2.0 includes new features: video recording and shared reality between multiple app users in the same location!
As human population increases and wetlands are developed, flamingos suffer from disturbance to their habitats, resulting in difficulty with breeding. The larger the flamingo colony size, the greater their chance of successful breeding. Flarmingos are virtual representations of twenty wild flamingos the artist has adopted through a conservation initiative. App users are invited to dance with flarmingos in interspecies solidarity and their presence increases the colony size. The app features original flamingo-inspired music and a button that takes you to Tour du Valat's flamingo adoption webpage where you can sponsor your very own wild flamingo!
FLARMINGOS on App Store is compatible with the Apple iPhone 6s and higher, Apple 9.7-inch iPad (5th and 6th Generation), and Apple 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro. The app requires iOS 11 for v.1.0 and iOS 12 for v.2.0.

FLARMINGOS app was developed using Apple's ARKit. The app requires access to a user's device camera to create an augmented reality experience. ARKit automatically asks for permission the first time the app runs an AR session. The app can be used to record, share and save digital photos and videos to their device. When users tap the heart icon, an information page opens. On the information page, userse can tap the adopt button which opens an external website using the Safari browser. Version 2.0 of the app uses Apples ARKit 2.0 to support shared reality between app users in the same location and requires a network to facilitate the connection: cellular, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. The app does not enable user accounts and does not store user data.
